Gastric bypass surgery is arguably a controversial means of addressing weight-related problems. One of the reasons is that patients sometimes see it as a "silver bullet", if you will, where all their weight-related problems disappear the moment they undergo the procedure. But, on the contrary, a substantial adjustment period is required post-op. In this period, patients experience emotional and physical distress-- primarily due to the abruptly lowered food intake that is needed. Thankfully, advancements in medical science now give individuals facing weight-related challenges a number of options. One of them is Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding, or Lap band. In this procedure, a surgeon inserts an inflatable adjustable gastric band through small (laparoscopic) incisions and positions the band around the upper portion of your stomach. This creates a small stomach pouch and passageway into the lower part of the stomach.
The procedure offers a number of advantages over other weight-loss surgery options: it is adjustable and, if the need should arise, completely reversible. It doesn’t require cutting, stapling or rerouting of the stomach or intestines and as such provides lower risks with the surgery and less serious long term complications. The procedure can be performed in an outpatient (day surgery) setting and offers a shortened recovery period.

Unfortunately, both of these procedures are very expensive, upwards of $25,000. On the up-side, many insurance policies will cover the costs of these procedures, even if it does require jumping through a few hoops to get the coverage.
